Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later has been longlisted for Outstanding British Film at the 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards – and the North East is the star.
The post-apocalyptic thriller was filmed almost entirely across our region, showcasing locations including:
Lindisfarne (Holy Island) – the film's central setting where survivors live isolated by the tidal causeway Kielder Forest & Water – atmospheric woodland scenes and the hydroelectric facility spillway Angel of the North – our iconic landmark features as a beacon of hope Newcastle upon Tyne – urban mainland sequences Gibside, Gateshead – key filming location Hexham, Bellingham, Rothbury, Waskerley – various Northumberland locations Sycamore Gap – digitally recreated after the 2023 felling St Cuthbert's Cave, Knowesgate, Newton-on-the-Moor – additional regional sites
Director Danny Boyle premiered the film at Newcastle's Tyneside Cinema in June 2025, praising the North East's "special skies" and the local crew and extras who made it possible.
Competing against 14 other British films, 28 Years Later demonstrates the North East's world-class filmmaking capability – from dramatic landscapes to technical expertise.
